You must go to Saint George’s Church in Old Cairo.
Christians in central Egypt started living in what is now called Coptic Cairo, part of Old Cairo. There are different stories about when this happened; some say it happened in the 10th century, while others say it happened long ago.
A Christian whose family tree returns to Egypt is said to be of Coptic heritage. The fact that Egyptian Christians were called “Copts,” which means “Christians from Egypt,” shows that they did Christianity in a way that was different from other Christians.

Location:
St. George’s Church is in Old Coptic Cairo, and it takes about half an hour by car to get there from Cairo’s financial district.
Since it was built in the 10th century, this church has not changed. In reality, there hasn’t been much change in this small Christian town.

History:
Ibn Marwan was Egypt’s governor-general when construction began on the St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
Ibn Marwan was in charge of running the country when Athanasius finished building the church. Al-Maqrizi discusses how the church was built in his book “History of the Patriarchs of the Coptic Church.”
A fire in the middle of the 20th century did a lot of damage to the church. Early plans called for rebuilding the building, but the domes were left out of the new design.
The Nuptial Hall, also called Qa’at Al-Irsan, is a small palace built between 1300 and 1400. An essential part of the whole that can’t be left out. It’s about 15 feet by 12 feet and has no exciting architecture.
Most modern churches only have two or three columns, which doesn’t make them very interesting.
The beautiful lattice and sculptures in the hall took me back to when the Mameluke dynasty of Cairo was in charge and lavishly decorated the city’s buildings.
