Al Fayoum Oasis, also called Joseph’s Canal, was made on purpose, and it was not made possible by underground springs but by the Nile flooding. The old canal is called “Joseph’s Canal” after the biblical character Joseph, who is said to have built the oasis. This area is vast because both the Nile and the big lake Birket Qarun are in it.
This huge lake, which might look like a vast ocean on a very stormy day, is where the Fayoum gets their unique personality and traits. When duck shooting was popular in the area, Winston Churchill and King Farouk often stayed in the hotels on the southern side of the lake. These people would stay in hotels and shoot ducks as they walked by to get better at shooting.
People still hunt ducks on this lake and the entirely artificial Wadi Rayyan right next to it. If you want to watch birds, this lake and the Wadi Rayyan right next to it are much better choices. Before salt water was added, fresh water was used to fill up Lake Qarun.

The fact that fish bones and the skeletons of freshwater plankton have been found in mud deposits supports the idea that this is true. During that time, there were floods on the Nile River that were strong enough to fill the lake.
Because the British built a dam at Aswan in the early 1900s, which was a precursor to the later high barrier, and an irrigation system that included more canalization along the Nile, the water that flows into the lake is more likely to come from farms than from the Nile, which is cleaner.

This is because the British built a dam in Aswan at the beginning of the 20th century, similar to the later high dam. The fact that people in Britain liked both of these new ideas shows why. Because the salt level is rising, marine life that used to only live in the Mediterranean has started to show up in Lake Qarun. Right now, these fish are being killed, and this is because the lake does not have any freshwater fish that can live in it in its current state.
In the middle of the Fayoum Oasis is a village that is not very old and is surrounded by a sea of palm trees. In the desert north of Lake Qarun, you might find the remains of old water wheels and other things from the Pharaonic and Roman times.
Donkeys used to do most of the work in the oasis, but now most of that work is done by camels. Camels like to eat berseem, so camel herders choose this green oasis over the thorny desert surrounding it.
The protected area of Wadi Rayyan is close to the city of Fayoum and has a small waterfall and two lakes. This waterfall in the Egyptian desert is unique and essential because nothing is like it. The Wadi Rayyan conservation area, which is in Fayoum, is also part of the park.
You can go hiking through the area’s hills and wadis, or you can go to the monastery in Wadi Rayyan. In this place, modern monks carry on the tradition of their ancestors, who carved these caves out of the rock at the start of the Christian religion. There are a lot of hills and wadis in this area that is just waiting to be found.
From the Wadi Rayyan tourist center, there are many places where you can look out over the lake. Birds traveling from Africa to Egypt often stop at the lake to rest, and this is because the lake has a large surface area of water.

A visit to the Whale Valley will be one of the stops on a tour that will be described in more detail later in this book. Some people have thought that it could be west of the Fayoum River. Whale Valley, also called Wadi Hitan, is where some of the most well-preserved fossilized whale bones on Earth have been found. This is the most critical piece of information that can be found. You should check out this vast haunted house, a unique experience.
